Soldiers competing in the annual Army Ranger competition are some of the toughest. The three-day competition tests soldiers' physical abilities with seemingly non-stop shooting, running and spinning events, as well as various skill tests including grenade throwing and tug-of-war.

The physical demands are too great. But according to top Ranger coaches, mental training is just as important.

Nate Wolch, a civilian awareness operations specialist with 1-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division, helped prepare Soldiers for the Best Ranger Competition at Fort Benning, Georgia. He told Task & Purpose that "a lot" of the best Ranger competitors are internal. While they will obviously push themselves to the limit physically, the important thing is that the contestants are mentally tough and able to withstand three days of grueling competition.

"We talked about mental training and what that's really like and when they're pushing against those walls in training, what do they do to prepare themselves to really push through it? To deal with it, to deal with the discomfort and the pain, not run away from it?" Wolch said.

So, while Soldiers were doing intense physical training to prepare for various competition events, such as a water survival assessment or a dance march of unknown distances, they were working with Wolch on breathing control and breathing techniques and "alertness training." Conducted or guided meditation. Even just 12 minutes a day for four weeks "can start to change different structures of the brain," Wolch said.

As Task & Purpose spoke with Wolch, the soldiers were cycling through the Derby Queen, where competitors run up and down, climb rock formations, jump ropes and balance on poles. Wolch said his soldiers were probably working to control their breathing at the time to "start that recovery" as soon as possible.

Wolch, who has a master's degree in sport and performance psychology and is working on a doctorate in cognitive psychology, said these breathing techniques involve "delaying the ratio of inhalation to exhalation" and breathing more slowly to lower their heart rate. He learned to hold his breath for seven seconds, starting with a four-second breath. He increased his lung capacity from there, Wolch said.

But it wasn't just mindfulness training or breathing techniques. Soldiers learned how to handle each other — sort of, Wolch said. They had to learn when their partner needed space and when they needed to push; Their "ideal energy level" or anxiety makes their partner feel better. And when soldiers rely only on their partners during the Best Ranger competition, it's important that they know how to best help each other.

Much of what Wolch proposed is in line with the Army's comprehensive health and fitness initiative, which focuses on a soldier's overall health — adequate sleep, good nutrition, mental and emotional health — rather than just the physical. The Army is still working to integrate physical and occupational therapists, nutritionists, strength and conditioning coaches, cognitive performance specialists and holistic health and fitness coaches into brigades across the force.

Wolch said within his brigade, they are still figuring out what works best, and they are using the best Ranger training as a framework to apply it to the rest of the unit.

Of course, not every soldier has to train like the best Ranger competitors—many soldiers in the competition have described weeks of relentless focus on physical training and a strict diet. But Wolch said that less and less people should be convinced to train in a way that focuses on the mental aspect of the physical.

"I think more and more people are accepting that the mental game is part of a good performance," Wolch said. “Especially people who've been to ranger school or failed something hard. This is usually due to mental defect, lack of focus, lack of confidence, lack of translating their hard work into actual performance. It always interferes with something psychological. "

Joining The Army Rangers

Some of the "old school guys" are "hard to convince," said Wolch, who often points to professional sports teams and organizations as examples of things moving in the right direction. "There are several sports [psychologists] on every MLB baseball team, every NBA roster, every NFL locker room," he said. "They're everywhere."

But for Wolch, it's personal. A boxer himself, he recalled that despite working "really hard" in training, all his preparations would disappear the moment he stepped into the ring due to nerves. He learned that you can't think about what it's like or the possible consequences of war. You have to be in the moment and you have to mentally practice for that.

He said that this did not happen by accident. "You really have to work to learn this skill."
