Glock Smith Wesson - The Glock G45 and the Smith & Wesson M&P 9 2.0 Compact are two of the most popular handguns on the market today. There is a reason for this. They are both beautiful. But is one better than the other? Technically, no... but personally, yes. Let's find out why.
These two came highly recommended by two people I respect: An old colleague, Ben Brown, carries a G45 as his EDC. In his review he says the G45 is the Glock no one asked for. In fact, it is sought after and has become a staple of the Glock line. When it hit the market in 2018, it surprised many people. In fact, it combines the best of both worlds - the barrel and slide of the G19 and the grip of the G17. Ironically, it is now considered by many to be perhaps the best Glock ever made.

The M&P 9 was highly recommended by another friend of mine, Rod Ryan. He is a former LEO and trained in law enforcement and the military. He carries an M&P as his EDC. I filmed with him in 2017, and he was rocking his M&P.
It has been around since 2005, and was originally designed for the military and police, hence the name, M&P. It has become a favorite among those who like the ability, reliability and accuracy of the hand.
The G45 and M&P appear to have found the sweet spot in terms of specs, price, look and feel. (Photo: Ben Philippi/)
Both 9mm guns are very similar in terms of MSRP, specs and 17+1 round capacity. The M&P is two ounces heavier than the G45 at 26.7 ounces unloaded. The barrel of the M&P is a quarter of an inch longer at 4.25 inches. But both are almost the same overall length at 7.4. in. The width and height of both arms are almost identical at 1.3 inches and 5.5 inches respectively.

One thing I will note is that as a result of finding my two tests in the Certified Used section of the website, the G45 came with a set of Trijicon Bright & Toughsights installed on it by the previous owner. These scenes are impressive and may affect the outcome of this review slightly. The M&P comes with stock sights, which are decent out of the box. Besides this, both of them are actions.
As they look the same on paper, they feel the same in the hand. The biggest difference right away is the M&P's grip texture. It's more aggressive and I really like it. I feel like the Glock could benefit from more grip texture.
The controls are well placed and I found them to sit well. The slide release is ambidextrous on both. The magazine release is reversible in both. Both have charging chamber indicators, but in slightly different places. Both have serti in the front which I like. I found the Glock's recoil to be stiffer than the S&W's, making the press checks and making the slide slide stiffer.

After putting 250 rounds of Federal 115 grain 9mm ammo into each gun, they both performed flawlessly. But this is where personal preference comes into play.
At 15 yards, I shoot better with the Glock. I'm not sure why - I just do. Maybe it's the upgraded sights, but I don't think so. But I feel good. Maybe this is a result of the shape and size of my hands.
I will say that I am not a fan of the trigger on any gun. They like lotto a lot. They are long and squishy. If I could slow my shot and get the triggerslack on the wall and then follow up with my shot, my accuracy was very acceptable. However, shooting easily from a drawer from the ready, the long trigger pull affects my accuracy.
This is where a lot of practice comes in handy. Ben Brown shoots very accurately with his G45 with stock trigger. Instead, Rod Ryan upgraded his M&P to an Apex trigger.

You can't go wrong with pistols either. They both performed flawlessly. It's more of a personal decision. (Photo: Ben Philippi/)
The great thing about the G45 and M&P is that there are tons of aftermarket parts available. I personally do not like to buy a weapon that I have to immediately release money to improve, but it is beautiful 'perfect'.
That said, both of these could definitely benefit from some mods. As I mentioned, Rod Ryan upgraded his M&P trigger. Ben Brown runs RMR in his G45. I can do both of these mods myself in two. But if I were to choose the Glock, I would add more texture to the grip.
Remember that if you want to add an RMRto ether to it, make sure you buy the latest model that is optically ready.

I can't say one gun is better than another. They are both fantastic options, and I believe you will be happy with one or both. But for my own personal preference, the Glock comes out a little on top. That being said, I recommend trying out a gun before buying it. Find a friend who has the model you're looking at, or you can rent it from your local dealership.
