Training With Industry Army - The Ordnance Corps started the Training with Army Industry (TWI) program in the 1970s and continues to place more service members in business partners than any other branch of the US Army. The program identifies elite entrepreneurial companies that have developed and achieved practices that cannot be taught in existing military formats. TWI participants gain essential work experience and skills in business practices and procedures not available in other military or civilian programs.

Embedded service members spend twelve months at participating industry organizations to learn and share maintenance best practices. Each member then completes a two-year deployment tour at various military organizations to pass on the lessons of their experience and shape the military's future operations, capabilities, doctrine and training. The TWI program is a unique expansion opportunity and pays dividends for the Ordnance Corps by incorporating the latest industry standards and best practices into every member's deployment. TWI. The Ordnance Corps currently holds 12 of the 63 positions available Army-wide, the most TWI positions of any branch. The drive within the Ordnance Corps is to maintain the current number of TWI positions so that the Ordnance Corps can participate in a variety of TWI programs involving all corps: officers, warrant officers (WO) and NCOs.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (28 August 2020) - The Training by Industry (TWI) program is a one-year internship placed by a selected Ordnance employee at the Organic Business Foundation. The purpose of the TWI program is to develop warrant officer knowledge in advanced management techniques and provide insight into the relationship between the warrant officer industry and specific functions within the air defense artillery (ADA) community. Chief Warrant Officer 3 Jesus Gonzalez was selected for the TWI program and has spent the last year working at the Letterkenny Depot (LEAD).

Training With Industry Army

As a 140L Air and Missile (AMD) systems technician, Gonzalez had a unique relationship with the depot. "This is our first iteration of TWI, which will help us bridge the gap in the relationship between the depot and the warfighter," Gonzalez said when asked about his involvement in the program. There are several options for TWI military occupation specialty (MOS) programs in the civilian sector, but Gonzalez saw a difference in the availability of internships within the ADA community. and the Fire Center of Excellence (FCoE) have been working hard to establish this post in Letterkenny," said Gonzalez. "For us, Letterkenny was an excellent host for the Air Defense TWI deployment as it will help us develop our practices on both sides, strengthening our shared understanding between business practices and our unit's soldiers."

Keep 'em Flying

Gonzalez spent much of the internship involved in LEAD's day-to-day operations and exploring the lab's capabilities. "My main goal was to learn as much as possible about the equipment, the processes and to validate the capabilities of the depot," said Gonzalez. "I had regular conversations with tradespeople and subject matter experts here in Letterkenny to collect as much data as possible for feedback to the force." A key feature of the TWI program is to allow the trainee to focus on positions in the depot that are directly related to the MOS "I learned how the depot works within the working capital pool, program management, complex synchronization and planning with the Missile and Space Program Executive Office (PEO M&S), Capability Managers ( ACMs) and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to ensure constant depot operations support," said Gonzalez on how the experience has fueled his own professional development.

The TWI program offers a number of benefits to the depot through the knowledge, skills and qualifications of the trainee. “The role of Battalion Readiness Officer and Brigade Support Officer has greatly helped me in my duties here in Letterkenny. Those skills I brought with me came in handy when I was explaining the areas in which our equipment is used in the field,” said Gonzalez.
